Drenched in Mercy
“For at one time you were not God’s people, but now you are. At one time you knew nothing of God’s mercy, because you hadn’t received it yet, but now you are drenched with it!” 1 Peter 2:10 TPT
When I think about being drenched I think of getting caught in a rain storm, or sprayed with a hose, or thrown in a pool. They are unexpected events that I’m not prepared for, so the feeling of being drenched is different than if I had planned to get wet. It’s a surprise, sometimes it’s uncomfortable, and it usually requires a change of clothes, lol.
I think the use of the word drenched, in this verse, is spot on when it describes God’s mercy. It’s often unexpected and it catches us off guard at times but it’s such a wonderful surprise. This is a time when being drenched is more than welcome! God thoroughly drenches us in His mercy and it’s a model of how He wants us to treat those around us.
We all need mercy and it’s in short supply these days. We have been given more than enough mercy that we can give it away to those who don’t have enough. I believe that’s why God drenches us instead of just sprinkling mercy on us. He gives us more than we need, or deserve, because it’s meant to be shared.
